I adore Near Wild Heaven. It's the song that I always waited for to come on, gleefully

IMO its their best song, and not just because of the nostalgia attached. It's just perfect.TripleJay97 wrote:I adore Near Wild Heaven. It's the song that I always waited for to come on, gleefully

I sometimes wish the vocals weren't pushed as far back into the mix, but other than that, it's perfect.

I see what you mean, it seems exclusive to Mills though. Its the same thing for his parts on SHP

So I checked Murmur out and finally decided that it was great, but they're still not grabbing me as I think they should do. It may have to do with Stipe's voice, dunno. My favourite track has to be Sitting Still, it has a lovely jangly pop sound.

It ain't that bad except for that Katie bars the kitchen signs line. Thank you, google.TripleJay97 wrote:Try deciphering a fucking word from it thoughLt Pinkerton wrote:So I checked Murmur out and finally decided that it was great, but they're still not grabbing me as I think they should do. Re: R.E.M. Thread
Interesting debate...Stipe's mumbling was a part of their mystique and appeal back in the day...
Coincidentally, I posted an article on my blog about the first time I ever saw REM in London...and I almost fell asleep! (it's not why you think!

Re: R.E.M. Thread
For me there's nothing more cathartic than the bit in Pilgrimage where Stipe goes "this pilgrimage...has gained momentum." Properly anthemic which is kinda weird in a jangly-indie record.Lt Pinkerton wrote:So I checked Murmur out and finally decided that it was great, but they're still not grabbing me as I think they should do. Oh and just read your article MrMagpie - nice piece! Glad to see that you like Pilgrimage as well.
Re: R.E.M. Thread
Pilgrimage is one of my all-time favorite REM songs...love that bass and drum riff under the verses and the choruses are, as you say, so anthemic. Really bring chills down the spine when they kick into it!

Re: R.E.M. Thread
I think if some sort of Indie rock band released Pilgrimage now, it would be a hit.

Sharing the Pilgrimage love here. An unbelievably good song.

Re: R.E.M. Thread
Just listening to New Adventures in Hi-Fi, and I think it might be my favourite Warner album (or at least equal with AFTP). I love how they pushed at the boundaries of experimentation, yet it still sounds defiantly like R.E.M. It really takes on a lot of styles as well, but somehow still sounds unified.
Some of my all-time favourites on here: E-Bow the Letter, Electrolite, How the West Was Won etc, So Fast So Numb. Any other love for this record?

Re: R.E.M. Thread
I think it's almost great but not quite. It's a bit too long and there is some muck on it.
But yeah, the songs you named are fantastic and it's probably a bit underrated.

Re: R.E.M. Thread
Yes the one negative thing about it is that it's slightly too long. But pretty incredible to think that they made it pretty much entirely on the road, with quite a lot of those songs actually recorded in soundchecks. An impressive producing job!
