Quite excited for this! Rumored collaborators are Stevie Nicks, Thundercat, Bad Bunny, strong suggestions of Billie Eilish... and that's probably just the tip of the iceberg. I enjoyed Song Machine, but a more focused, conceptual Gorillaz album sounds like a treat.

God the reddits moaning about the long wait...we waited 12 years for the magic whip

Surely it'll just be a song or a few songs rather than the whole album? bloody hell things move so fast these days

Damon on Radio 2 Jo Whiley at 7:30pm

Presumably for the Cracker Island launch. Which is bizarre as that song couldn't sound any less like a Radio 2 song.

EDIT: He's also on Radio 1 at 6pm, which would probably be the debut of the song

Damon Interview on R2

Post by windymiller » 22 Jun 2022, 08:33

Damon is on with Jo Wiley tonight, 22nd June on Radio 2. Presumably it'll be for the first play of 'Cracker Island'.

Very Daft Punkesque with that bassline by Thundercat.

Album produced by Greg Kurstin, famous LA producer known for his work with Adele & Taylor Swift (LOL)

Damon on BBC2: "He is an amazing producer. I was initially quite resistent to the idea of working with such a pop producer, but I met him and he was in The Flaming Lips, he played with Beck, we both have the same taste in pop music, so actually it was a marriage made in heaven"

"Cracker Island is about the story of how a cult of madness is formed. It's quite narrative. It's about how people live these days, the realities they made for themselves without exploring what happens outside."

"It's the idea that all the people who have crazy ideas can live happily together in their own echo chamber called Cracker Island"

little bit of autotune creeping in? First listen...meh it's ok it's not like a 'massive' hit but its a bit more of a single than we've had for a while. Can't hear any daft punk references/influence. The track seems a little muffled to me, maybe its the vocals? I guess that's what you get with an aging singer. I dunno.

I'm sure it'll be great live

It's very Humanz isn't it? I know people didn't love that album but I like what Damon does when he tries for that dark, club sound. Agree it's not a classic single but, after a fairly unremarkable first third, I think it whips up a real head of steam. Wish it had more of a guest vocal than Thundercat's occasional interjections. Damon doing a good Terry Hall impression in the verses.

Loving it. It was fairly obvious that Thundercat was going to kill the bass part, but those added funky guitar licks are incredible too. Really intrigued by Greg Kurstin and his production on the rest of the album. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of it.

It's like DARE's little brother... same kind of vibe / rhythm. Not quite as catchy perhaps.

Fantastic funky bass from Thundercat. The instrumental has more depth than the 30 seconds snippets would lead you to believe. I tried not to play the live versions of this too much to not spoil it, and, well, it’s a certified banger! I like that there’s still some mystery to how the rest of the album will look, sound, and feel. Wonder when we’ll know more? Damon seemed quite cryptic with Jo!

Side note: the release of the Gorillaz art book with those wonderful collaborations Jamie orchestrated is the perfect way for the art side of Gorillaz to match Damon’s eclectic musical collabs. I’m enjoying this album rollout thus far!
