RIP Tony Allen

Post by tom_cas1 » 30 Apr 2020, 21:56

So sad to hear about the passing of Tony Allen. Confirmed by Dave on Facebook.

“ Such sad news tonight to hear the passing of Tony Allen, who many of you will have met and seen perform live. He was part of the extended Blur family. Lets all say a prayer and light a candle and think of his wonderful smiley face and cheeky grin and incredible talent. RIP dear sweet soul xx”

I am really shocked to hear this, really sad news :( A big part of TGTBATQ has died but he seemed to be a really genuinely nice guy as well as a very talented musician.

Really sad news. My wife just this morning came across a clip of our little boy dancing to Go Back a few years ago, then I heard Tony had died, one of those weird coincidences. I put the clip here: https://twitter.com/jeffknottingham/sta ... 2627164160

I'm so upset. sometimes people say you shouldn't meet your hero's. I met Tony last year in London he had just been playing and the energy as we shook hands was powerful his spirit IS amazing. I don't know if anyone else was there when the Good The Bad and The Queen played the Roundhouse at the BBC electric Proms in 2006. Half way in to 3 changes Tony misses a beat - live on BBC radio I think being recorded for TV to. Suddenly everything stops. I was front row that evening and I remember looking straight at Tony he's face dropped. Damon and Paul were kind of what the hell happened there. The crowd went silent. Seeing your hero's face looking disappointed well I couldn't help but shout giving encouragement "come on Tony"! Damon being the perfectionist he is went nuts started the song again but the way they played that return was tight as hell bringing more energy - that was Tony . The spirit up keep Tony!

I was at the Roundhouse for the gig front row to the left side of the stage and I remember them starting again, Damon often does this, it kind of ruins it a little when he does this. Amazing gig and unveiling of the debut album, I remember listening to the songs unfold thinking oh well if there is no more Blur then so be it. But Tony Allen brought something completely different with him, especially on their second album, he features so much in its sound, just amazing.

Very sad, I only knew about him by being a fan of Damon, but have since listened to his own work and he was very unique. If TGTBATQ carried on in the future without him, I really don't think it would be the same as like Blur they all contribute something to the sound.

This is so sad, it feels like someone from my family has died. First there were some rumors, but then Stephen Budd and Ian posted it, and then there was no doubt, that it was true. What a shit year

I was very lucky to see him play with TGTBTQ in 2011 for the greenpeace gig. I know its strange to say so early after his death but I am thankful for that small moment in my life

Deeply saddened by the news. Feel so lucky to have not only seen him perform many times but to have briefly met him as well. Lovely man and the master of his craft. Such a shame especially considering he was still at the top of his game, with performances and releases planned.

Definitely not shocked, he smoked hash every day and was 80 years old and looked it but definitely didn't drum like it. What a cool life, imagine what he saw, where he drank, and those he passed and those he befriended.

Very sad .
"Go Back" is to me the best collaboration song Damon made .
It´s better than all Gorillaz songs .
R.I.P. Tony Allen .
