am I blurs biggest fan...

Post by damon008 » 25 Feb 2018, 13:31

i dont mean me directly, but what is a biggest fan.

recent ,,topics abd posts got me thinking. does a biggest fan have to have the unconditionel love and praise everything

or can it just be a completist

or the attend every gig person....

how do you say who is a big fan?

also is a criticism of the band an automatic disqualified?

to quote doug, my 2 pence is i think the best fan is one who is a completist and puts the positive spin on the bad things

i hope to attract comments

I was up there 1993-1999 saw them 14 times, but i'm not one of the "anything Albarn does is brilliant" especially recently.

The difference that run of albums was simply brilliant, with the live shows to match.

I think the order is:

1. Fan
2. Superfan
3. Stalker

To be the biggest fan you would have to be a stalker and no one wants that.

"Paul, do you think Ringo is the best drummer in the world?"
"Ringo? Come on, he's not even the best drummer within the Beatles..."

:D Sorry, off topic but could not resist...

someone claiming to be "a proper Blur fan" and not knowing or not even slightly interested in Graham´s solo work is as weird to me as "a proper Beatles fan" not knowing (f. e.) Ram

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Ringo's playing, that was just for the quotation... ;)

To come back to the topic, I think there's a fine balance in being a fan. I was thinking about completism: we all have a pretty decent and complete Blur CD collection I guess, now I'm not convinced owning every single little thingy ever published (who said Democrazy there in the back?) will make you a "bigger" fan. Not from my point of view anyway.

Just like FLM said, the thing is to enjoy the music first. Well said! If you know you like the music, then you know to what degree, then you know whether or not you consider yourself as a fan, I don't think there's too much of an absolute outer scale to measure that.

To be the biggest fan of the band permaps you just have to love the music to the sort of extent where you really do play it to death I guess, and take an immense interest in the catalogue and the band's musical activities, and you can do that on the music's own terms. Sure I and others own a massive Blur collection but in a way its something of a by-product. You can still hear all that stuff on Spotty-fly and YouTube. And you don't have to love everything in there. No one does. I can be passionate about Blur, the Cure, XTC, the Beatles and whatever and acknowledge the weak spots. And as for attending every gig that's just another side effect of one sort of fandom. Personally I'm not bothered about seeing bands live as much as others. As long as I have the records of a band I'm pretty much content.

Yes I agree.

Interesting point. This also shows how some work is considered more commercial than others, and therefore gets the accolades.

I hate it when people say they're a big fan and the proof is their extreme collection of Blur (or any band) rarities, books, cds/vinyl, etc

Some of us are big fans but are poor. :D

I've always found trying to define what makes someone the best fan (or even a 'true' fan) to be really divisive and unpleasant. No one is particularly better or more important than anyone else. At the end of the day we're all just people who enjoy music from a band. There is no crown or sceptre for The Best.
