Interview: Tony Visconti (Part Two), Songwriting magazine

What else have you been up to lately?

(...) I’ve met up with Damon Albarn from Blur and Gorillaz of course, and we’re in talks – that’s looking bright and sunny.

‘We’re in talks.’

It doesn’t sound like it’s a done deal then by any means. A producer like Visconti is an eye catcher that’s for sure but I suppose we’ll have to see.

I hope and pray this set of songs will live up to the first set. I say set of songs, as that brings as back to producers. Those songs always sounded better in a live setting than whatever it was Brian Burton brought to them. I love that album for Damon’s songs, but I always had this nagging thought that it could have been just a touch better with a different studio recording. Just me maybe, but I do still like listening to the live versions now. Northern Whale was always the one that stood out for me as not quite living up to the live renditions.

This video has nothing to do with TGTBATQ but the fact that they filmed Paul Simonon (and Damon) in Studio 13 gives some hope, lol! And Zane Lowe's interview too.

i think damons voice was at its weakest during the studio recordings of this album and the mixing not good also. he got more used to his changing voice after this album was finished.
id love to hearsome of these songs rerecorded now with his developed voice and betting mixing

Yes indeed. There's a rumour it'll include a cover of 'Fog on the Tyne', Gazza's big hit back in the 90s.

I'm just looking forward to hearing that beautiful sound again. I know they're using a different producer this time around but I really liked the production on the first album. I could be in the minority though, but to me it adds to the overall feel of the band. Excellent on all levels.

I'm not too worried about GBQ having any autotune. It doesn't suit the band, and I don't think Tony Visconti will be as fond of it as, say, Twilite Tone.

Absolutely hate autotune too. I'm hopeful for a part acoustic album... Just wish the Gorillaz would wind up sooner, so Damon can put full efforts into the project, even though I'm sure he will.

I hope the GBQ record comes out in late 2018 or April 2019. I'll be studying abroad in London from January-June of 2019 and my goal is to see them live whilst there! Would be an amazing addition to my "blur itinerary" :D

:o Really! I hope it covers the Lindisfarne original (1971) and not the shouty Gazza version.... :P
