Also huge fan of Battle, hopefully they also dig it up some day.
It was a great moment. I liked the way it confused the people around me. :D

Brilliant song, love it!

So atmospheric, I love it when Dave's pounding drums kick in.

Definitely one I'd love to hear live, but can't see it seeing the light of day again.

Would be a great replacement for one of the 6 Parklife songs getting played,but as others have said, probably not for Hyde Park.

It's a bloody masterpiece.
I have waited a long time for you to come to your senses 8-)

Edit: Missed out the word "waited" :lol:

This is my favourite live version from the Depot, London, 10 March 1999: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKlcPMatPLA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm willing to bet this song is about Damon's 'battle' with, amongst many other negative things that went on in his personal life, his addiction to drugs.

I never got the impression that Damon had an addiction? Thought he was just more of a dabbler!

I always thought the song was about a relationship, but I assume all the songs on 13 are about relationships. Or "the" relationship, rather.

When you get to that point where all interactions end in arguments and everything becomes a battle.

Heroin is inherently addictive so it's not really possible to use it and not become addicted to it. The way he's described it, heroin was being used openly and frequently in his home, and he felt the pressure to participate and did. And the way he's described his life, the normal stress of being a national celebrity, panic attacks, the stress of the whole country turning against you out of the blue and mocking/harassing you every time you leave your home, your bandmates, girlfriend, and the rest of the 90s rock star scene using drugs, the deteriorating relationships with the bandmates and girlfriend, plus whatever normal problems he had before blur becoming more pronounced, and the list goes on and on. There are a lot of reasons for heroin and some other drugs to be very appealing to him. Thankfully it seems that he's sorted himself out, but no doubt for a period of time that was a difficult aspect of his life.

That live version is absolutely fantastic. The guitars are a lot better, and the little vocal and lyric changes like the one at 2:53 make a big difference. With that and some of 13's other live versions it makes you wish they had fleshed it out while touring before recording the album!

Fantastic song, it's one of my 4 faves on 13 along with Bugman, 1992 and Trimm Trabb.

I looooooove listening to Battle (along with Caramel & Trimm Trabb) with headphones on. I always hear little sounds & bits with headphones than with regular speakers. Battle is one of my favorite Blur songs.

I never got to see them play it live, which is a real shame.

I still love this live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M0FHUd0XKE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

True, they were all nervous since they hadn't perform together live in such a long period, but it was still epic! I still feel Meltdown features one of the best overall set-list Blur ever did as well!
