It's funny really, cos Lonesome Street is definitely their cleverest album opener, in terms of it being the smartest decision to put it first and everything it represents. It's a little stroke of genius to be able to come up with that song in the first place, that is so utterly familiar yet doesn't remotely copy or rip off anything they've done before....and in the context of it being the 'comeback record' and it being placed up front, it's the smartest opener they've ever had IMO.

I like Lonesome Street but I think along with Stereotypes its the safest opening to an album they've ever had. Previous openers always seemed to me to be like a real mission statement, like they were veering off into hitherto unexplored areas, if you know what I mean?

Anyway... its Tender for me.

Went for beetlebum.
Surprised ambulance is not higher though with it being so loved by the forum.

1. Beetlebum
2. For Tomorrow
3. Lonesome Street

By the way, due to me getting a faulty version of Think Tank Me White Noise was the album opener

I know what you mean (it's why I voted for 'For Tomorrow') but beforehand they were very much in a different position in terms of their place in the public consciousness....so with this being a 'comeback' record I think coming up with Lonesome Street and sticking it up front was a very smart move.

Wow that was difficult. Three way tie between For Tomorrow, Beetlebum, and Tender for me!

It has to be Beetlebum for me, then probably For Tomorrow. Honourable mentions to Stereotypes and Lonesome Street.

Wasn't it Terry Hall who declared Stereotypes as the best album-opener ever?

Ha! Him and Damon were having a bit of a love-in at this point though weren't they?
