Best Album Opener?

Post by TripleJay97 » 29 Apr 2015, 09:36

I felt we had every poll possible except this one :P

It was tough, but I ended up on this:

1. Beetlebum
2. Ambulance
3. Lonesome Street

Tough. VERY tough between For Tomorrow and Beetlebum for me.

I went for Beetlebum. So:

1. Beetlebum
2. For Tomorrow
3. Girls and Boys

I think the quality of the track has to be separated from the "opening the album" element.

Clearly Tender is far and away one of Blur's best ever songs, but is it the best opener in the context of the rest of 13? Absolutely not.

Taking that into account, I think Ambulance sets the scene for Think Tank better than many of the other tracks do for their respective albums...

1. Ambulance
2. Beetlebum
3. Girls & Boys

For Tomorrow
Beetlebum
Lonesome Street

For Tomorrow by a distance for me. To follow Leisure (admittedly with Popscene in between) with something like For Tomorrow was a hell of a statement and it was the point when you realised Blur were something special.

Easy - it can only be "he's a twentieff senchry boy (boom boom boom!)".
Not heard Lonely Street enough yet to rate it properly but doubt it'll top FT.

For Tomorrow for me as well, what a statement of intent.

They certainly knew how to pick an album opener, all of those songs are up there with their best.

I completely agree.

I was thinking about album openers this morning after Stereotypes came on Spotify shuffle play. This is perhaps harder to decide than the best closer. I'm going to go with:

1) She's So High — you might think it's an odd choice but it just pipped For Tomorrow for me. That slight volume swell into the chime of the opening chord tugs my heartstrings as the very first sound we hear from a Blur recording and it's so perfect in that context as the opening to begin all openings.
2) For Tomorrow — sets the tone for MLIR, it gripped me from the very first listen
3) Beetlebum

When Blur came on at Goldsmiths in 09 and opened with that.... that sound was euphoric.

1. Beetlebum
2. For Tomorrow
3. Ambulance

Interesting how except for Think Tank, they all open with the lead single (except for TGE which opens with the intended first single).

Oh this was tough! Apart from Stereotypes, they are all great songs and great openers. I had to go with Beetlebum in the end. Tender close second. Then Girls & Boys and She's So High. Then For Tomorrow and Ambulance. Stereoptypes last. One of my least favourite Blur songs.

Tender for me, easily. It's the ideal opener for any album, compilation etc.
