I hate Crazy Beat, dreadful song, but could possibly be topped by Gene-by-Gene. Thank god they didn't get Fatboy Slim to produce The Magic Whip!

Looking back Think Tank got very generous reviews, it really was under-developed.

Anyway 13 has been my favourite Blur album for a very long time. It was an album that was a big comfort to me during my teenage angst which extended into my early 20s. I love the atmosphere of it and it is a great headphones album; and as someone else mentioned for when you are out walking.

Swamp Song, 1992, Battle, Mellow song, Caramel, Trimm Trabb and No distance left to run are probably my favourites. I also think Optigan 1 is a fantastic closer for the album, it just works for me.

I don't think that was the case, at all. Save for the two songs you mentioned, the rest of the album is rock solid. In fact, I would say Think Tank is vastly under appreciated by the community.

'Coffee & TV' - a number 11 song in the charts, if ever there was one. :)

the first blur album i bought, back in 2002/2003, loved coffee&tv always. bugman, swamp song, battle, trimm trabb were the initial standouts. 13 and Leisure are the two albums i tend to listen to straight through. individual songs dont get much play otherwise. one of the great albums though :)

Best Blur album, probably my favourite album of all time along with OK Computer. One of the reasons I love it is because it isn't overplayed or commercial, most people hearing it first time are shocked by it and sometimes dislike it

In 1999 and 2000 I used to turn off the lights to listen 13. I never had had the need to do that to listen music, until that album.

I guess that when I listened to 13 for the first time, it was a bit like when, as a kid, I listened for the first time to "Helter Skelter", get what I mean?

Being more into pop (please don't judge me), Helter Skelter was a kind of a shock to me, I was like "Ugh... Is this really The Beatles???" but the more I listened to it, the more I loved it.

Quite the same thing with 13. Coffee & TV? Love at first sight. Tender? Not my fav tune but it was pretty easy to like it. Same with no distance left to run, and even Mellow song.

But it took me more time to get "used" to the other songs. Yet, the more I listened to them, the more I enjoyed them.

For me it's very difficult to choose between 13 and MLIR for my favourite Blur album. Some days in 13, some days it's MLIR. Just an incredible album on so many levels, I love it. So many textures and tones that no previous Blur album contained. I imagine The Magic Whip will be a kind of successor to 13 in terms of sound, that's the impression I got from Go Out anyway.

I really hope the magic whip is weirder than 13 in parts. Weird Blur is the best Blur.

I doubt it'll be nearly as soundscape-y or sweeping as 13 was. I honestly think it'll be more more like s/t.

If for no other reason than Streety is involved and not Orbit. I think it will have a grown up, challenging sound a bit like 13 but within slightly more conventional song structures. 13 was really choppy and mixed up due to Orbit's working methods of course.

Yeah I thought it was a shame that Orbit burnt his bridges with them... That whole thing raises a couple of interesting questions though.. I think it says a lot that he was seemingly their first choice to work with again with Graham back on board. I also wonder what might have become of all that if things had been different.. Wonder if it was just the one song they were planning on producing with him (Westway), or whether they were in the process of starting what might have become a new album...?

I'm struggling to remember what happened.. Damon just stopped all work on whatever they were doing so Orbit got pissed off and retaliated by leaking the unfinished Westway if i recall?

Yeah, Orbit spat his dummy. But not sure there was ever more material. My recollection and understanding is it was only Westway and *maybe* The Puritan that Orbit was ever going to be involved in. It was a one-off double A-side single for the Olympic show as we know, so can't see there was anything else for him to be involved in. Unless there was stuff we didn't find out about.

Don't get me wrong though, would love to have seen the boys work with Orbit again if it hadn't gone pear shaped. It was such an incredible union last time.

I was under the impression that they were tentatively beginning work on new material when Damon cancelled it all. That was the vibe I was getting at the time..

I really liked it on first listen back in 1999 but it took many years before it became my favourite Blur album or at least joint. For me the production was the problem but have grown to love what Orbit did with this although I am really pleased that Street is back, really really pleased :) The new track sounds as if the band have jumped into the studio on the back of 13 rather than a 16 year gap but at the same time sounds like they are moving on to the next Phase of Blur. I have a feeling I will be listening to 13 more and more with the release of TMW.
