That Milky phone case!! <3

Also LOL at the Blur 21. It's a bit frustrating isn't it? But I'm not going to complain that they are giving us a new record that doesn't fit there. Moreover, I hope we got another 7 albums coming that fit into a new compiling box :P

I posted this on Facebook. It's self-indulgent but I thought I'd share it anyway.

21 years ago almost to the day (Monday 25th April 1994) my Dad, as usual, dropped me off outside Chesterfield College at about 8.30am. I was 16. I waited for him to drive out of sight and, once he'd vanished around the corner, I gleefully performed an about-turn, strode purposefully away from college and headed to Hudson's, the local independent record store.

It was the day 'Parklife' was released. I stood outside Hudson's, alone, waiting impatiently for them to open. When I got inside the shop they hadn't even unboxed the week's new releases. Shambles really. Anyway, I told them I wanted 'Parklife' and I wanted it now. They cut open a box, gave me my copy (if I remember rightly I paid £15.99 for the CD - what a joke!), and I headed for the bus stop to wag college (sorry Mum), go home and soak in the new album I'd been so excited to hear since the lead single 'Girls & Boys' had been released.

I listened to it all day on my Dad's amazing sound system. Simon Currie came round at about lunchtime and remarked that track 11 - 'Trouble in the Message Centre' - sounded like Pop Will Eat Itself. I thought he was talking bollocks to be honest but it was a great track.

The album was a revelation, as good as the great but unsuccessful 'Modern Life as Rubbish'. The songs were all brand new to me - all I'd heard was Girls & Boys, the lead single, which I'd bought on cassette - cos that's how it worked then.

21 years and two days later - i.e. today - I headed into town (Manchester) on the tram to buy Blur's miraculous new one, 'The Magic Whip'. I recalled that day in April '94, and I thought about how things have changed since then. On my way to buy the album today, the brand new album, I listened to it. Cos I already had it. I was listening to the album on my way to buy the brand new album that had only been released that morning. This morning.

I don't do this any more. I don't go to record shops on the day a new album is released, all giddy and excited and wondering what the sleeve notes will be like. But it was good to do it again. I wore my old Blur 'Popscene' t-shirt - 23 years old and full of holes. I don't know why. I just did.

I felt nostalgic and quite excited as I picked up the CD (£7.99!) and the vinyl. On my way to the store I'd daydreamed about having a chat with the kindred spirit member of staff who served me....maybe tell this story I've just told, maybe share our excitement about this fantastic new record that nobody really expected.
It didn't pan out like that, of course. The girl behind the counter almost certainly hadn't even been born back in '94, and she didn't give a shit. She probably thought I was some sad old dude buying some album by a band of sad old dudes that she'd never heard of.

But I had a really nice time. And it's a great album.

Having the best Blur Day! Got into town with the Magic Whip playing in player. Straight into HMV to get the single (got it... woooh!) - they were playing TMW as well. Then on to newsagent to get Q with the 21 page Blur special -Graham & Alex interview. Now sitting in spring sunshine having a coffee and reading the mag. Life is good! :D

Nice story Sean!

Great little excursion to buy the album. HMV Birmingham had the album on full display as you went into the shop, and as I walked in Ice Cream Man was playing! Lady working on the till said she was loving the album, as well. Like a few others now sitting in the sun having a listen!
