I recall the producer made him put Mr. Tembo on which is good.goadamn wrote:I really like Everyday Robots but I like his mellow somber simple tunes.
When you read interviews about this album, he's very candid about his producer focusing it on those types of songs and how he has amassed a bunch of poppy uptempo songs that were never recorded for the album. Which is great! He has more material for a fun Gorillaz album and some stuff for TGTBTQ and Blur =)
It's always best to appreciate each album for what IT IS, not for what you are comparing it to.
Everyday Robots is a great little minimal album and I get the feeling he really enjoyed making it and touring it around.
Everyday Robots is pretty good. It's just too much a good thing perhaps? It's so depressing all the way through. I feel like if each song was released separately without the context of the grim album we'd be over the moon about each track. But as it is depression to depressing apart from Mr. Tembo we're kind of drowned by it.
Everyday Robots
Really interesting sound. Great opener
Hostiles
This song never did anything for me until I saw a live version of it on his website. Not sure what that says.
Lonely Press Play
Beautiful song. One of my favorites from his whole career. Can mean so much, interesting sounds throughout, strings, excellent.
Mr Tembo
I always thought it sounded a bit like an old Blur song so in that way it is a brilliant track. Light hearted and fun. I'm not sure if the production does it justice though.
The Selfish Giant
Love this song. I remember in an interview Damon said that even though it sounds domestic it's actually about submarines. I reckon it's probably about both and he's just being veily. Good production and catchy (Still depressing though)
You and Me
Pleasurable on the ears but has no point. It feels like two different songs like it is and the lyrics have no impact on me. None of them make sense or connect. Luckily the melodies are nice enough to keep me around. No structure.
Hollow Ponds
I like the brass but other than that it's a bit boring. Add the fact we can't relate because the lyrics are so so personal. There are definitely some good moments but overall a bit meh.
Photographs
This is a tricky one. It's good but nothing special.
The History of a Cheating Heart
I really like this one, though I don't seem to listen to it enough. Very personal. (Although in the context of the album it's still depressing)
Heavy Seas of Love
It's beautiful! but I usually just use this one to try and get people interested in the music because it's the most friendly.
