The Ride Thread

Post by MrMagpie » 08 May 2015, 02:21

Alright, who else loves these guys? I'm a huge fucking fan, ever since one of my best friends turned me on to them back in the late 1990s. He'd been a fan since they were around, sadly I didn't get into them until they'd been split a few years. Just found out tonight that my buddy bought me a ticket to go see them with him in Boston in October...super psyched!

So who else likes them? Favorite albums and songs?

I do. Nowhere is a classic, but I've been really digging Going Blank Again. I'll be seeing them on Sunday.

I tried to get tickets to the Roundhouse but was too late! I could have said I had a Ticket to Ride.

Yeah, big fan, and personally I prefer Going Blank Again over Nowhere, probably because of the bigger bounce between styles. Nowhere is damn fine all the same of course. Going Blank Again has what is arguably (imo, in other words) the crowning achievement of shoegazing if MBV don't count, the endlessly listenable Leave Them All Behind. I don't hate Carnival of Light or Tarantula like some people do and although I don't like them as much as the previous stuff there's a lot of nice stuff on them both, my favourites probably being Birdman, Only Now, Black Nite Crash and (even though its style is not usually my thing) The Dawn Patrol. Of course, pre-Nowhere Ride is often overlooked as well and actually produced a lot of their best material (Chelsea Girl c'mon!)

Their first 2 records and EPs are really amazing, really happy that they back.

Glad to see there are other Ride fans on here! I love all of their stuff, but for me Nowhere, Going Blank Again and *gasp* Carnival of Light are just exquisite. Hell, I even like most of Tarantula so there you go. I'm really excited to see them in October especially because I'll get to share it with two of my best friends who I haven't seen in a couple of years and I'll get to travel back home to Boston to do so (it'll be my first time back in a year by the time of the show).

For those who have seen them or are going to see them soon, please share how they've been in concert...good? bad?

Just saw Ride live at Shaky Knees festival. I'm tired as hell so full details will have to wait until tomorrow, but I will say that they were incredible.

I liked the single 'I Don't Know Where It Comes From' - IIRC Mark & Lard gave it a lot of airplay on their evening Radio 1 show, but I don't recall it being played in the daytime. I bought the 'Carnival Of Light' album but didn't take to it overall.

'Leave Them All Behind' was a "blink & you miss it" top ten hit, so typical of indie in that respect. But it was great, and very evocative of the indie period it came from :D

Big fan here too, I was gutted when they played the O2 in Oxford the other month. It was a fan gig and by the time I got sorted it sold out!

I realized I never posted my review of the Ride show I saw 2 years ago :lol: --> http://rnrchemist.blogspot.com/2015/10/ ... -rock.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also, the new album Weather Diaries that came out a couple of months ago...AMAZING. Who else here has it? What do you think of it?

Since my previous posts on this thread, I have dug out the 'Carnival Of Light' album. It is rather better than I remember it :mrgreen:

I LOVE that album. Never really understood why the band hate it...?

Awesome! Any particular songs they did (especially new ones) that stood out to you?

I didn't know they hated it. Though I understand the two songwriters in the band had their differences, and it was leading towards the band breaking up.
