Anyone like (or even heard of) Mitski?

Post by Neal Zeal » 24 Aug 2023, 14:47

I've heard her new single, Bug Like an Angel, on 6 Music a few times recently and it's a beauty.
I wasn't aware of her before but it seems like she's had quite a few albums out and a new one coming soon.
Looking forward to exploring...

My wife's a huge fan. I'm only familiar with Be The Cowboy, but it's very good.

That's good to know, thanks.
I was a bit worried she might be like St Vincent i.e. interesting and original but songs a bit weak.
Look forward to exploring the albums (if I can find them on somewhere on CD!).

There’s a lot to enjoy.

I’ve been up and down on St. Vincent for nearly a decade but after seeing her live earlier this year, I’ve become a big fan. Her live performances just don’t translate to recordings though for some reason (though I think Jack Antonoff’s horrible production is a big reason).

St. Vincent's album with David Byrne is absolute brilliance.

That's interesting to hear. My problem with the St Vincent album I bought was that the melodies just weren't very strong.
Perhaps collaborating with Byrne meant the songs were simply better formed.
Back to Mitski...
I've bought her current album and ...
it's pretty good!
It's not amazing (as the reviewers will have you believe) but there are 4 or 5 great songs on it.
Bug Like An Angel is still the standout for me.
My joint favourite song of the year along with The Narcissist!

St. Vincent songs weak? Nah bro, what you on about. I'm a big St. Vincent fan, although shamefully for some odd reason I still haven't checked her last album. But her songs are anything but weak. And her discography is so vast and diverse. She has her own unique style, but it translates very differently into each album so they never end up sounding the same. Strange Mercy and the self-titled are top records.

As for Mitsuki, I checked My Love Mine All Mine just recently because it was all over TikTok. She look interesting.
