Re: Beetlebum: reaction at the time

Yet Think Tank is a fantastic album. That's a matter of opinion. The Graham influence is clearly missing and it suffers for it. Graham would not let a song like Jets be on an album. Out of interest, what makes you think that? I mean, Graham has a long interest in free jazz and plays the sax. It's o...

But there is no Sing. There is no Sing so it can't be right.

Re: Beetlebum: reaction at the time

I didn't buy 13 when it came out - I loved Tender but I was seriously underwhelmed by a lot of the rest of it; I remember listening to it excitedly on a listening post in HMV in Brighton and just thinking it was pretentious soupy nonsense - those early songs (Bugman, Swamp Song, 1992, BLUREMI) just ...

Re: Beetlebum: reaction at the time

My memory is that the backlash to TGE is largely a fiction. When that record came out it reviewed exceptionally well and I don't really recall people turning their backs on Blur. It was just that a bit of time passed and other records came out that people turned their attention to. I might be misrem...

Re: New track from Gorillaz to premiere on BBC Radio 1 this Thursday

Ah, I enjoyed that. Not heard of Slaves previously but that was a nice track - strong shades of Fun Boy Three, which is how it should be. Jolly good!

Re: Idea for Damon and Jamie

Excited about a new song. I'm really into the idea of Gorillaz basically just being Damon's rolling identity now; his diary band. I feel like projects happen when they're scheduled for Damon now - write an opera in the Spring, play with TGTBQ in the Autumn (for example), maybe carve out space for an...

Re: Damon's vocals: a revelation

Small contribution to say I'm all in favour of Damon's vocal guides and mumbled contributions post-Blur. They opened up a whole new aspect of his songwriting and Blur's sound - he began using his voice as an instrument, and things got both looser and more harmonically interesting (a lot of the time)...

I love this song but I have just never ever ever been able to get beyond Damon singing 'appen instead of happen. Irritates me so much.

Re: Most Oasis sounding Blur song?

Oddly I always thought She's So High sounds more like Suede - or rather, Bernard's playing on the first Suede LP sounds sonically v similar to She's So High.

Re: Graham talking about modern life is rubbish

What a lovely interview. Lovely to see him talk with such unvarnished optimism about the group - and nice to remember what a glorious record MLIR is; I don't play it very often, although a few tracks are always rotated on my stereo - Resigned, Oily Water, Miss America. I must listen to it more.

Re: alex james in trouble!

Couldn’t care less what Alex thinks really, but wouldn’t assume he’s centre right necessarily, although he clearly is happy to socialise with the Tories in his social circle! Up to him.

Labour voter and member of over 20 years here but can’t do it while Corbyn is leader, so going Green this time.

Re: Parklife and Two States

I might be imagining it but I seem to remember Graham providing a 'what I'm listening to' list in one of the issues of Blurb. If I recall correctly it was a mix of US punk (Nation of Ulysses etc) and jazz. Was probably '96 or later. I found this later quote from him, referring back to the recording ...

Re: Parklife and Two States

No, it’s an interesting question!! I’d really like to get more of a sense from artists on who they’re listening to when they do new stuff. It’d be great if each new LP a band presented came with a little bibliography of stuff that was on it the background at the time. Pretty unappealing from a band’...
