Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

I would certainly say the first two Gorillaz albums were huge cultural landmarks. They were almost like Parklife in a sense, albeit on a much bigger global scale- they were zeitgesity. Plastic Beach maybe not so much, even if it did still sell a lot. PB is actually my favourite of the 3 but it prob...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

The Magic Whip is maybe the 3rd or 4th best Blur album, with no identifiable or lasting major hit single, supported by a handful of medium sized gigs. Demon Days and Plastic Beach both sold a heap of records, contained multiple hits, and led to mammoth world tours of arenas and festival headline se...

Re: Girls and Boys reaches 100 million milestone on Spotify

Thanks - didn't know this - but now I can hear how Paul's stuttering dubby base would have worked wonderfully with this track 🙂 They played it in 2011 at Coronet, London. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crkw9pDHwzg http://vblurpage.com/gigography/gbq/11_1110_coronet.htm Actually getting quite emoti...

Re: Girls and Boys reaches 100 million milestone on Spotify

Given Blur's sound tended to evolve and change every few years I think it could be argued much of Gorillaz's output could have been a future Blur's. It is not like Blur had not experimented with other singers before. Had Damon never been so close to Jamie (or never fallen out with Graham) we may ha...

Re: Girls and Boys reaches 100 million milestone on Spotify

Ghost Ship could be a Gorillaz song and by virtue of that alone has a more contemporaneous sound and potentially wider reach than most of Blur's back catalogue. I got shot down for saying that last year  I'm somewhat in the camp of people who shot you down. For me there are several Blur songs...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

IDOP - thank you very much for that detailed response, whilst the scale of the numbers is a bit too high for me to carry an intuitive sense of what will have done what (in terms of commercial success) for any given random future number of sales, that definitely gives me more of a ballpark and an und...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

Speaks of how important these lists are. Being the Times album of the year did next to nothing for Merrie land. It also featured in a host of other magazines best of the year lists as well as garnered rave reviews on its release. http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/album/A6109.htm Sadly I don't think suc...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

It hasn't made any lists because promotion and marketing (as always with Damon albums) has been shite. Humanz was named Q's album of the year and made 18 on the NMEs list. The Magic Whip was #15 for the NME, #10 for Rolling Stone and made the Stereogum top 50. Even Merrieland (possibly the only one...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

Hi Doug! If I remember correctly the CD envelope was definitely on its own in the bundle, ie. not inside the clear plastic seal for the book, nor in the book itself. The CD is probably only for completists - just the first 11 tracks, in a card sleeve... Thanks for the clarification, that's roughly ...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

Just a further update, Almanac arrived today - don't think the CD is there though (haven't opened the plastic sleeve) My Almanac finally arrived a couple of days ago. The CD was in a thin card envelope wrapped separately in the same package - so make sure you haven't chucked it out  Thanks f...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

Sorry to hear guys. My experiences of online ordering have been good and bad :) :( Like many here I ordered the Almanac + CD + circle of friends back in May when it was first announced. The circle thing has operated well - I've signed up for the live stream next month, and I nabbed O2 tickets last ...

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine

Didn't make the NMEs end of the year list either, which is a big shock as they are typically very enthusiastic about everything Damon does.

Re: Gorillaz - Song Machine Tour 2020-2021

Yeah, it was very ambitious and for the most part a big success, visually well put together and I say that as someone largely indifferent to the art. Personally I still feel a lot of the SM material is a bit weak and as such I had hoped for (but didn't really expect) a more eclectic setlist, tight p...
